My Story
When I ended my second year on the academic job market without an offer, it felt like the world was ending.
​
I had dreamed of being a professor since I was in the second grade. When I got into a PhD program, that dream
felt so close, but so far away.
In addition to course, research, writing, and teaching, I began to study how to get my tenure-track dream job.
And when none of that turned into a job, I felt like I had failed and life was over.
I had only had a few entry-level jobs before my PhD program and I was anxious that I had invested all of this
time only to end up where I began, an entry-level job, but older, and with more debt.
So, I turned to the one thing I knew I could do: Research.
What I found was that I hadn’t failed. I had been failed. Failed by a system that only prepared me for one type
of job while knowing that that job was getting rarer and rarer. Failed by a system that didn’t teach me to
identify my skills outside of broad academic categories. Failed by a system that didn’t teach me how to talk
about my skills without discipline-specific jargon.
And when I figured out how to navigate the non-academic job market, how to de-code job ads, and translate
my skills into non-academic language? That’s when I turned around to make sure no one else ever felt like
their world ended because they didn’t get the TT job.
